We follow the tried-and-true "Rule of 4" for jewelry care:

NO SWIMMING
NO SUNNING
NO SHOWERING
NO SWEATING

This rule applies to all types of jewelry, including but not limited to 14kt, 18kt, and 24kt yellow and white gold, platinum, sterling silver, fine silver, gold-filled, brass, copper, and all plated variations. All of these can tarnish, discolor, or corrode over time.

Some jewelry may be more resistant than others, but all jewelry is susceptible to these elements. Click here for the rundown on various metals gemstones.

Swimming & Sun Tanning
Swimming in the ocean can dull and scratch both metals and gemstones, even diamonds, due to the combined effects of salt, sand, and sunscreen. Pools present similar issues, as chlorine can cause significant damage.

Showering
Much like swimming, showering can dull your jewelry. Shampoos, conditioners, and soaps can leave residue on chains and in the crevices around stones, making them appear cloudy. Exfoliating scrubs and salt scrubs can be particularly abrasive. Skincare chemicals, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, AHA, and zinc oxide, can also damage jewelry over time.

Sweating
While occasional sweating isn’t a problem, it's best to avoid wearing jewelry during intense workouts. Sweat deposits oil. lotions and dirt onto jewelry and can accelerate tarnishing. Jewelry can also get in the way during exercise, increasing the risk of damage or injury.

Cleaning Tips
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth to gently remove dirt and oils from your jewelry. Then when possible, use a polishing cloth only on metal components, as these cloths contain mild abrasives that can enhance shine but may damage semi-precious stones. You may see black streaks appear on the cloth as it removes oxidation from the metal.

Helpful Tips
To help prevent damage to your jewelry:

  • Apply beauty products before putting on your jewelry.
  • Let lotions or creams fully absorb before wearing jewelry.
  • Avoid direct contact between jewelry and perfumes or sprays.
  • Clean jewelry regularly with gentle solutions free from harsh chemicals or abrasives.
  • Store each piece in its own airtight, anti-tarnish pouch to prevent scratches and minimize oxidation.

Storage Tip:
Although not glamorous, the best way to store jewelry is in individual, airtight plastic bags—like the ones we use for shipping. This keeps jewelry safe from elements, prevents scratching, and slows down tarnishing. Storing multiple pieces together can lead to tangling, scratches, and accelerated tarnish.

We offer a variety of storage bags and cleaning options for purchase here!
